The idea is Boxi's, the logistics are handled by Flugschule Chiemsee, and the flying is handled by the participants themselves, albeit with plenty of advice along the way. 14 pilots have signed up to fly as much as possible from St. Jean-de-Luz on the French Atlantic Coast all the way to N of Barcelona in Spain. Goal is to meet up again each evening, share experiences and have fun, and start all over again the next morning.
We think this is a great new way to explore the whole hike-and-fly universe with arguably one of the masters of the trade (besides the big Kirgistan trip, Boxi has flown in the X-Alps and crossed the Pyrenees several times before, and he regularly wins the local hike-and-fly events in the German-speaking part of the Alps).
UP makes at least two wings which are well-suited for this sort of adventure, at each their end of the spectre; the Makalu Light is a VERY easy and forgiving lightweight wing with plenty of XC performance, whereas the Trango XC3 is a top-of-the-pop XC machine that has been weight-optimised to make it an extremely high-performing hike-and-fly weapon. We know that Boxi will be flying his across the Pyrenees, and wish them all the very best when they go off on this great adventure together!
