Test report of flight school Edelweiss on RIMO 2 (EN/LTF A)

Wednesday, 15 January 2025

Markus Reuther, owner of the flight school Edelweiss, was one of the first to test our new A-wing RIMO 2. His conclusion in the summary is as follows:

“The RIMO 2 is a well-balanced beginner's wing that offers an extremely high level of passive safety. The difference to the previous model, RIMO 1, is the better climbing performance of the canopy during zero wind starts. I don't currently know of a better wing in the A-segment that handles all training maneuvers as well as the new UP wing, such as accelerated big ears, pitching, rolling and, above all, collapses. When it comes to the most important descent maneuver for beginners – accelerated big ears – nothing flutters, the ears are big enough, the descent maneuver is stable and therefore also effective and long-lasting. The canopy launches beautifully and there is hardly any collapsing. If you want to have fun or learn to spiral, the control is precise to the centimeter, allowing you to practice and learn perfectly without reaching an overly dynamic flight state.”

His detailed feedback:

Material: “The risers are clear and, above all, I like the way the brake line is attached with the snap-lock – these are also more practical for ground handling or when wearing thick gloves. Top!”

Launch: ”The RIMO 2 launches very evenly, fills up well from the start, so that the filled canopy is fully maneuverable just above the ground. The forward launch in zero or light wind conditions is easy, the canopy stays on track, does not deviate and does not overshoot. In windy reverse launches, the canopy also stays on track, is balanced and does not lever."

Flight phase: “The overall braking distances are appropriate for an A-class canopy and fit well. The control pressure is also as you would wish - the brake pressure increases progressively, the stall point is late and easily recognizable with high brake pressure. The control inputs are implemented precisely and intuitively. The RIMO 2 is a glider that beginners can fly accurately and easily. The roll damping is moderate to high, the glider is difficult to rock. When you want to roll more (without the support brake), the RIMO 2 still remains stable and open for a long time. The collapse behavior is very confidence-inspiring – the RIMO 2 turns a maximum of 90-100 degrees on its side (unaccelerated collapse) and then remains standing. A wing that makes perfect sense for a beginner, the built-in safety is extremely high.”

Thermal: “Active thermal flying is possible, the RIMO 2 stays in the position you give it, and it takes even low climbs (the test site was Bassano in winter) and displays them well over the canopy and the brakes. You feel like a pilot and not a passenger.”

Landing: “The RIMO 2 is not too slow in terms of speed, the flare is successful thanks to the very direct and harmonious brake linkage and pendulum effect. The wing takes over very well and the stall is clearly visible. Perfect to get out of the harness beforehand.” *wink*

We would like to thank Markus Reuther for taking the time to write down his impressions and look forward to many more reports from the training! PS: Markus, weight 76kg, flew the RIMO 2 in size SM. You can find the size chart and more information about the wing here.
